Extracting Comprehensible Rules from Neural Networks via Genetic Algorithms

چکیده
A common problem in KDD (Knowledge Discovery in Databases) is the presence of noise in the data being mined. Neural networks are robust and have a good tolerance to noise, which makes them suitable for mining very noisy data. However, they have the wellknown disadvantage of not discovering any high-level rule that can be used as a support for human decision making. In this work we present a method for extracting accurate, comprehensible rules from neural networks. The proposed method uses a genetic algorithm to find a good neural network topology. This topology is then passed to a rule extraction algorithm, and the quality of the extracted rules is then fed back to the genetic algorithm. The proposed system is evaluated on three public-domain data sets and the results show that the approach is valid.

A Statistics Based Approach for Extracting Priority Rules from Trained Neural Networks
In this paper, a statistics based approach named STARE that is designed to extract symbolic rules from trained neural networks is proposed. STARE deals with continuous attributes in a unique way so that not only different attributes could be discretized to different number of clusters but also unnecessary discretization could be avoided. STARE introduces statistics to the generation and evaluat...
متن کاملLearning Symbolic Rules Using Arti cial Neural
A distinct advantage of symbolic learning algorithms over artiicial neural networks is that typically the concept representations they form are more easily understood by humans. One approach to understanding the representations formed by neural networks is to extract symbolic rules from trained networks. In this paper we describe and investigate an approach for extracting rules from networks th...
متن کاملKnowledge Extraction from the Neural ‘Black Box’ in Ecological Monitoring
Phytoplankton biomass within the Saginaw Bay ecosystem (Lake Huron, Michigan, USA) was characterized as a function of select physical/chemical indicators. The complexity and variability of ecological systems typically make it difficult to model the influences of anthropogenic stressors and/or natural disturbances. Here, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were developed to model chlorophyll a con...
متن کاملUsing Genetic Algorithms to Extract Rules FromTrained Neural Networks
This paper describes a novel method of extracting rules from trained artificial neural networks. The system which uses genetic algorithms to find an optimal path through the network for a classification. It is claimed that this system compares favourably to traditional rule extraction algorithms due to its ability to extract rules from very large and complex networks without an exponential incr...
متن کاملNeuroLinear: From neural networks to oblique decision rules
We present NeuroLinear, a system for extracting oblique decision rules from neural networks that have been trained for classiication of patterns. Each condition of an oblique decision rule corresponds to a partition of the attribute space by a hyperplane that is not necessarily axis-parallel. Allowing a set of such hyperplanes to form the boundaries of the decision regions leads to a signiicant...
